Walkway in the Sky―the Kokonoe “Dream” Grand Suspension Bridge

In Oita Prefecture, you will find Japan’s largest walkable suspension bridge―the Kokonoe Yume Otsurihashi Bridge (Kokonoe “Dream” Grand Suspension Bridge).
After two and a half years of construction and extensive testing to ensure safety, the striking 390-meter-long bridge was finally opened to the general public in 2006. Since then, over 11 million people from near and far have crossed it. As of 2020, the bridge ranks as the top sightseeing spot in the town of Kokonoe.

Set foot onto the bridge, and you’ll feel a slight tremble reminding you that the bridge is hanging high up in the air—but rest assured that the spectacular view that awaits you is more than worth the courage you’ll need to summon up! If you’re feeling particularly adventurous, take a peek down at the breathtaking view of the mountains through the gratings beneath your feet. (If you’re not so comfortable with heights, just walk along the left side of the bridge—where it feels quite stable—and be sure to hold onto the handrails.)

As you walk forward, you’ll be treated to a panoramic view of the Kyusuikei Valley and its enchanting forest, with an ever-changing face across the seasons. It’s particularly striking in early November when the leaves turn from tender green to vivid red, giving dynamic new life to the scenery. Decorated by the majestic Shindo no taki, chosen as one of Japan’s 100 best waterfalls, it is a site of truly unparalleled natural beauty that you won’t soon forget.

Worked up an appetite? Before you leave, treat yourself to a famous Kokonoe Yume Burger (Kokonoe Dream Burger) made from locally sourced meat and veggies. Available near the ticket booth, it’s a perfect way to fuel up for your next adventure!
