Oshino Hakkai is a set of eight ponds in the small village of Oshino, not far from Mt. Fuji.
The village has been designated as a Mt. Fuji World Cultural Heritage Site Asset, and
in 1985 its ponds were officially selected as being among the National Top 100 Spring
Waters in Japan. The water in the ponds originates in the melted snow of the mountain,
and it contains natural minerals. The result is very clear water that is supposedly good
for the health. The wonderful scenery of this village attracts tourists from all around the
world, who come to admire the splendid views of Mt. Fuji at different times of the year.
Around the largest Oshino Hakkai pond, there is a small open-air museum, the
Hannoki Bayashi Shiryokan, and admission costs 300 yen. The museum is housed in a
traditional farmhouse and displays tools and household items of long ago. Around the
pond, there are many thatched roof farmhouses and gardens. In the nearby stores, you
can buy local souvenirs, snacks, fresh fruit and other food items.
